If you are regularly enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate course (Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree program according to the Bologna Process) in a partner university of the University of Basilicata, you can spend a long or short period of study at our University.
Please contact the relevant office at your university (International/Erasmus Office or equivalent) to confirm if an Erasmus agreement has been signed with the University of Basilicata or consult the List of Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreements currently in force.
STEP 1: Nomination
You must be officially nominated by your university by filling out the following Google form by:
Please note: you are not allowed to apply directly.
Once nominated by your home Institution, you will receive the necessary registration information and the access code for the application form.
STEP 2 - How to apply
Once you receive your access code, click here to register and apply. Be sure to review the Registration and Application Guide before starting.
Application Period:
Late applications will not be accepted!
As part of your application, you will need to submit several supporting documents, including proof of your proficiency in Italian or English, in line with the Institutional Agreement with your home University (usually at a B1 level, unless specified otherwise in the agreement).
We strongly recommend that you also discuss and define the activities for your exchange period with both your home University Coordinator and the Departmental Coordinator at the University of Basilicata. Their contact details can be found in the "Contact" section.
If you need information about available subjects or courses, you can reach out to the responsible faculty member for the specific agreement. Contact details are available under Erasmus+ Inter-institutional Agreements.
Required Documents:
If the EWP (European Web Platform) is unavailable, a paper version is acceptable.
For more details on submitting the Learning Agreement, visit the section below.
As the majority of the courses offered by Unibas are taught in the Italian language, the B1 level in Italian Language is strongly recommended. Please note that no certificate is required.
To plan your studies at the University of Basilicata (Unibas), you must complete a Learning Agreement. This document lists the courses you plan to take during your Erasmus stay, and the ones you want recognized at your home university afterwards.
Before filling it out:
How to submit it:
Important: The Learning Agreement must be approved before your Erasmus mobility starts. Approval can take time, so please start the process as early as possible.
If your application and documents are complete and correctly submitted, they will be forwarded to the appropriate Department. If accepted, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance along with useful information.
For non-EU students: The Acceptance Letter is required for your visa application. A digital (PDF) version is usually sufficient. If a paper copy is needed, request one by emailing incoming@unibas.it.
Before Your Arrival
Please email your exact arrival date at least one month in advance to:
incoming@unibas.it and suigeneris_basilicata@esn.it
Accommodation
If you want to stay in a university residence, contact the Regional Education Agency (A.R.D.S.U.) at: antonio.luongo@ardsubasilicata.it
Note:
For non-EU students only: Once your visa is issued, please send a scanned copy of it (either type C short-term or type D long-term) and proof of health insurance valid in Italy to: incoming@unibas.it
EU citizens do not need a visa to study in Italy.
Non-EU citizens must apply for a visa through the Italian diplomatic representation in their home country after registering on Universitaly portal, this tool has been designed for international students willing to study in Italy both for an entire study cycle or for a semester/year abroad.
Depending on citizenship, country of residence, length and purposes of the stay in Italy, students may need to obtain a Visa before coming to Italy. Check if you need an entry Visa and the documents required on MAECI Visa for Italy
This procedure does not concern citizens of Countries in the European Union, as well as from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the Swiss Confederation, the Republic of San Marino and the Holy See.
Students need to register first, select the Erasmus+ or other kind of study or traineeship program in the "Kind of Application" field, specify the Italian representative (Embassy/Consulate) in their country where they will apply for a visa, and fill in the online form (Guide to Pre-Enrolment Application - Universitaly Portal).
The University of Basilicata will only accept and validate applications from students who have completed the application procedure on the Esse3 platform. The Universitaly portal will then automatically generate a letter to be delivered by the candidates to the Italian representative abroad. The Embassy/Consulate will start the visa procedure only for candidates already accepted by the University.
The visa application procedure can take several months, so you must apply well in advance by using the Universitaly portal.
Please, mind that the Universitaly application is compulsory but does not guarantee or imply any automatic right to the issuing of the relative study visa, which is the exclusive responsibility of the competent embassy or consulate.
It is strongly recommended to ask for the issuance of an official Italian Tax Code (codice fiscale) at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. The codice fiscale (or Italian tax code) is required to carry out a wide range of activities in Italy, such as opening a bank account, signing a tenancy agreement, registering with the Italian National Health Service, and receiving payments or reimbursements from the University of Basilicata (if any).
There are two types of Visa: short-term (Uniform Schengen Visa. type - up to 90 days) and long-term (National Visa type more than 90 days). Both types of visas are issued by the Italian Consulate or Embassy in their home country.
To learn more about Schengen Visa, please consult the related website: Schengen visa information
EU/EEA and Switzerland students
Students from the EU or the EEA countries may move freely without the need for a study Visa.
Students with EU citizenship (and citizens coming from Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) can live in Italy for 3 months without incurring any legal obligation.
If the stay is longer than three months but still temporary (as an exchange student i.e.), at the end of the 3rd month, students must carry out a compulsory registration (iscrizione allo schedario della popolazione temporanea) at the municipality offices. The Application must be submitted to the "Ufficio Anagrafe" depending on where they live.
The registration is free of charge and must be carried out within the first 3 months of arrival in Italy.

Individual tutors, appointed by the Tutoring Committee at the beginning of the academic year (by October), are professors or researchers from the Department. The list of tutors is usually published on the Department's website. For more details, contact the Department's Academic Office.
International students at UNIBAS receive orientation and support services upon arrival in Potenza/Matera and throughout their stay. These services are provided by the International Relations Office, Department Coordinators, and Erasmus+ programme mentors.
Orientation and tutoring activities begin in the second-to-last year of high school, through the University Center for Guidance, Lifelong Learning, and Student Support (POLiS).
These services help students make informed choices about their education, support their university career, and enhance employability.
The activities include individual tutoring for academic challenges, exam preparation, thesis development, study planning, and career advice. Support also includes guidance on study abroad opportunities and aligning educational choices with professional goals.
According to the Italian University System, for each learning activity students gain a certain number of university credits (in Italian: 'Crediti Formativi Universitari' or CFU) and a qualitative evaluation (mark awarded on a 30-point scale or pass/fail exam. The minimum mark for passing an exam is 18/30, while 30/30 (with possible honours) is the highest mark.
Credits (CFU) are units that are used to measure the total amount of workload required to a student, in terms of (class time, individual study, exam preparation, practical work etc.) and one credit is equivalent to 25 hours. One academic year corresponds to 60 university credits. To learn more, please look into the "What the ECTS is" and related boxes. The grades in the Italian University system are expressed out of thirty. You pass an exam or internship with a grade of at least 18/30. If you obtain full grade (30/30) the examination board may also decide to award you honours (lode).
Important: failed exams are not usually recorded and therefore they are not listed in your Transcript of Records. If your university requires failed exams to be listed in your Transcript of Records, you must explicitly ask the professor to record the fail, immediately after the exam. The failed exam can be recorded as "respinto" (rejected) if you finished and failed the examination, or "ritirato" (withdrawn), if you did not finish the examination. It is not possible to record a numerical grade lower than 18. If you fail the exam you do not obtain the relative credits.
For some activities, i.e. language exams, including the Italian language courses, some internships, laboratories and seminars, you will not be given a grade but merely an Idoneo/Pass. The same Idoneo/Pass is listed in the Transcript of Records. The Idoneo/Pass can never be transformed into a numerical grade.
In the Transcript of Records, which is issued to you at the end of the exchange period, the grades are indicated on the Italian scale out of thirty and are converted in the ECTS scale.
How can be certified teaching activities not included in the curriculum
If you need a certificate of attendance, ask the professor during the first lesson because he/she will decide whether to issue a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.
In the Italian system, mere frequency is not enough to obtain credits. If you wish to take part in activities that are not in the course unit catalogue and which can therefore not be included in your study plan (some internships, seminars, preparation of the dissertation, etc.), you must immediately agree with the professor on how to perform and certify them. Please, don't forget that these activities and evaluations can be only certified by the professors on stamped and signed headed paper, but they cannot be recorded on your Transcript of Records. Therefore, check well in advance whether your university accepts this kind of certification, please.
Italian Language course
Students coming to UNIBAS, within European Programmes, can benefit from Italian language courses supplied at the beginning of the semester, through the Language Centre of the University. Courses are structured in different classes depending on the learner's level (CEFR) and developing general competencies and communicative and linguistic skills. Courses last 40 hours and allow gaining 3 credits. They are for learners who need to learn or improve their Italian. At the end of the course, after the final examination, students receive a certifying Diploma. If you like to attend the Italian Course, you'll have to plan your arrival within the last week of September (1st semester/one year) or the end of February (2nd Semester). No intermediate courses will be organized.
Other languages courses
The University offers, through its Language Centre, free courses, in blended learning (using the DI.L.LE platform), to students, teaching staff and staff at different levels (A2, B1 and B2-CEFR), in the principal languages of the EU (English, French, Spanish and Germany), before the mobility abroad (semester 1 and 2), organizes language Campuses as part of educational activities.

Important: Please note that the start and end dates correspond to the check-in and check-out dates (the first and last day you attend our University). The dates correspond to the dates of the arrival and departure tickets to/from Potenza or Matera if you are sending documents instead of meeting us in person. In this case, copies of the tickets must be sent to incoming@unibas.it. Without them, we will not be able to issue any certificates.
Transcript of Records
The Transcript of Records, certifying the passed examination with grades and related ECTS credits, is issued by our Service at the end of your exchange period (the document is in the English language). The University of Basilicata implements the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to facilitate the transfer of acquired credits and the academic recognition of studies carried out abroad (click on the box below to learn more about it and download the ECTS table in use at our university).
Check on your ESSE3 page that all the exams you have taken at this university are registered. Inform incoming@unibas.it before you check out. If you have any other activities (dissertation, combined study and work placement, research, etc.), please contact your departmental/school coordinator or, in the case of a dissertation, your supervisor. It is recommended that you meet with the coordinator before you check out and send a copy of the document to incoming@unibas.it.
If, at the time of your departure, all your examinations have been registered and any additional documents (thesis and/or internship certificate, etc.) have been issued to you, the Transcript of Records will be sent to your home university by e-mail as soon as possible. Otherwise, it will be sent to your home university at a later date, once the missing data has been entered into the system. Please check regularly that all examinations are registered and contact your lecturers if you do not receive your results.
The "European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System System" - ECTS was instituted in 1989, within the Erasmus programme, as a way of transferring credits that students earned during their studies abroad into credits that counted towards their degree, on their return to studying in their home institution. In the following years, it came to be used not only for transferring credits, based on workload and achieved learning outcomes, but also for accumulating them in institutions degree programmes. The ECTS tables and grading scale are tools designed to facilitate the transfer of academic results (expressed in terms of grades) between different national assessment systems. They are adopted by the universities in the countries belonging to the European Higher Education Area and they allow the conversion of the grades from one country into grades used in another country, following common European rules.
Following the ECTS Users guide 2015 and the guidelines of the CHEER project, the University of Basilicata implements the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to facilitate the transfer of acquired credits and the academic recognition of studies carried out abroad. As a general rule, 1 CFU (University Educational Credit) credit equals 1 ECTS credit which amounts to 25 hours of work. Credits are gained by passing end-of-course exams, independent of the marks attained. The list of exams passed by the student, the relative scores and the acquired credits (CFU / ECTS), are reported in the "Transcript of Records", issued by the Internationalization Service, according to the information provided by the structures responsible for teaching, prepares and updates the ECTS tables.
The ECTS, tables containing the statistical distribution of the grades achieved by homogeneous groups of students in a given period, are updated every year and contain the data of the exams and final examinations of the previous three ended academic years (1 November - 31 October).
In the ECTS tables, for each grade, the percentage of students who achieved it is reported. They thus show how a national scale of grades is used within an institution, based on its grading policies, and also allow, through comparison of cumulative percentages, the conversion of grades between different national systems.
By clicking on the name of the Department of reference of the course of study, it is possible to view data relating to all the courses of study ordered as follows: degree courses ex DM 270, degree courses ex DM 509, master's degree courses ex DM 270, specialist degree courses ex DM 509 and single-cycle degree courses (if activated). Courses are then classified according to the ministerial class and ISCED code (table of correspondence between the degree programme classes and ISCED codes - Annex 2 DD 389).
Starting from the year 2017, statistics are calculated according to class of degree as per ministerial provisions.
Check the ECTS tables up to the 2022/2023 academic year
From the academic year 2023/2024, at the University of Basilicata, homogeneous groups of students are identified by merging courses of study in the same ISCED disciplinary area (1 digit). Within each disciplinary area, students are divided by study cycle (bachelor's, master's and single-cycle degree).

WARNING: the grades may differ depending on the reference legislation (DM 270 or DM 509) and the same tables also show the grade converted to the ECTS scale.
The ECTS scale is constructed according to the following rule:
The ECTS scale is used on a residual basis for the conversion of grades obtained at institutions that have not yet adopted the ECTS tables, but only the scale.
It is important to underline that the ECTS scale only allows the transfer of grades between universities in countries belonging to the European Higher Education Area which have adopted the same ECTS scale and should not be confused with other grade scales expressed in letters of the alphabet. Outside the European Higher Education Area, different grading systems exist and often coexist, but no general mechanisms have been defined at the international level for the conversion of grades similar to ECTS.
Supporting documents: Students, before arriving, have to agree on a learning agreement for study or traineeship in case of placement, with the coordinators at home and host institutions detailing the students proposed study programme for the duration of the stay (i.e. individual course units and the number of related ECTS credits). This agreement must be approved by all the involved parties before the mobility.
At the end of the stay the student will receive a document called Transcript of records, or Traineeship certificate in case of a placement, to ensure that students have an accurate and up-to-date record of their progress, the educational components they have taken, the number of ECTS credits they have achieved and the grades they have been awarded. The transcript of records/traineeship certificate will be issued by the University of Basilicata for each incoming student and sent to the home institution at the end of their period of study.
Assessment methods: Each course is graded on a scale from 1 to 30, with 18 and 30 e lode (30 cum laude) as a minimum and maximum pass grade, respectively. Some exams can be evaluated by pass/fail (pass = superato or idoneo) or by sufficiente (sufficient); buono (good); eccellente or ottimo (excellent). For the final dissertation a 110-point scale is used, which is divided in two as well, with 66 being the minimum grade for passing. For outstanding results, the Lode "praise" is added to the maximum grade. Please keep in mind that the Idoneo/Pass or "Approvato/approved" can never be transformed into a numerical grade and "respinto/failed exams" are not usually recorded therefore they cannot be listed in the Transcript of records. It is not possible to record a numerical grade lower than 18. If you fail the exam, you do not obtain the relative credits.
You are recommended NOT to book their flight back home the day after their last exam. Sometimes the dates might change.
Please don't forget to go to the Internationalization Service or to contact the Department contact person in Matera (violetta.pedalino@unibas.it) before you return home to close out your mobility period. We would be grateful if you could make an appointment with our staff at least 3 days before your departure. Please email us at incoming@unibas.it.
