The Area

The University of Basilicata is located in southern Italy, in the Basilicata region, which borders Puglia, Campania, and Calabria. It has a short coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea and a longer one on the Ionian Sea. The region includes two provinces: Potenza and Matera, with Potenza as the capital. Covering 9,992 km², it is one of Italy's least populated regions, with around 587,517 residents. Basilicata is known for its traditional values, stunning natural landscapes, ancient history, and warm hospitality.

The region is mostly mountainous and hilly, with flat areas along the Ionian coast. Highlights include the ancient villages of Pietrapertosa and Castelmezzano, the UNESCO-listed Sassi of Matera, Greek temples, castles, and beautiful parks like Pollino National Park and Gallipoli Cognato Regional Park. It’s a place full of history, nature, and unique cultural gems.

Potenza & Matera

Potenza, the capital of Basilicata, is located at 819 meters above sea level. Founded in Roman times, the city was largely destroyed by earthquakes, with the last one in 1980. It sits along the Apennine ridge, near the Basento River, surrounded by scenic mountains. The historic center, located on higher ground, is accessible via Europe’s longest escalators. Key sights include the "Palazzo del Governo," the restored 'Stabile' theater, the Medieval Church of the Trinità, Palazzo Loffredo (home to the National Archaeological Museum), and several ancient churches, including the 11th-century Church of San Michele Arcangelo and the Cathedral of Potenza, which houses the remains of Saint Gerardo, the city’s patron.

Matera is one of Italy's most captivating destinations, known for its ancient cave dwellings, the Sassi, rock-hewn churches, and unique natural areas. In 1993, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for being the "most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean." Its history dates back to the Paleolithic era, with later settlements reflecting key stages in human development. The city’s striking landscape has been featured in films like "The Passion of Christ" by Mel Gibson. In 2019, Matera was named the European Capital of Culture.

Climate

Basilicata has a varied climate due to its exposure to two seas. The eastern part, influenced by the Adriatic Sea and the irregular mountain terrain, experiences a continental climate, with Mediterranean conditions only along the coast. Inland areas, especially in winter, become significantly colder.

On the coast, the Metapontino plain has mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers with frequent winds. The Tyrrhenian coast sees slightly warmer winters and cooler, more humid summers. In the Matera hills, winters are cold and foggy, with snow often appearing from November to March, and summers are hot and dry with large temperature fluctuations.

In the Apennine mountains, which cover most of the region, winters are very cold, especially above 1,000 meters, with snow lasting until spring or even May at higher elevations. Potenza, located at 819 meters, has snowy winters with temperatures dropping as low as -15°C, making it one of Italy's coldest cities. Summers are moderately hot, with cool nights. Winds mainly come from the west and south.

Erasmus Charter for Higher Education & Erasmus Policy Statement 2021-2027
The ECTS Tables and Grading Scale

The "European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System System" - ECTS was instituted in 1989, within the Erasmus programme, as a way of transferring credits that students earned during their studies abroad into credits that counted towards their degree, on their return to studying in their home institution. In the following years, it came to be used not only for transferring credits, based on workload and achieved learning outcomes, but also for accumulating them in institutions’ degree programmes. The ECTS tables and grading scale are tools designed to facilitate the transfer of academic results (expressed in terms of grades) between different national assessment systems. They are adopted by the universities in the countries belonging to the European Higher Education Area and they allow the conversion of the grades from one country into grades used in another country, following common European rules.

Following the ECTS Users’ guide 2015 and the guidelines of the CHEER project, the University of Basilicata implements the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to facilitate the transfer of acquired credits and the academic recognition of studies carried out abroad. As a general rule, 1 CFU (University Educational Credit) credit equals 1 ECTS credit which amounts to 25 hours of work. Credits are gained by passing end-of-course exams, independent of the marks attained. The list of exams passed by the student, the relative scores and the acquired credits (CFU / ECTS), are reported in the "Transcript of Records", issued by the Internationalization Service, according to the information provided by the structures responsible for teaching, prepares and updates the ECTS tables.

The ECTS, tables containing the statistical distribution of the grades achieved by homogeneous groups of students in a given period, are updated every year and contain the data of the exams and final examinations of the previous three ended academic years (1 November - 31 October).

In the ECTS tables, for each grade, the percentage of students who achieved it is reported. They thus show how a national scale of grades is used within an institution, based on its grading policies, and also allow, through comparison of cumulative percentages, the conversion of grades between different national systems.

By clicking on the name of the Department of reference of the course of study, it is possible to view data relating to all the courses of study ordered as follows: degree courses ex DM 270, degree courses ex DM 509, master's degree courses ex DM 270, specialist degree courses ex DM 509 and single-cycle degree courses (if activated). Courses are then classified according to the ministerial class and ISCED code (table of correspondence between the degree programme classes and ISCED codes - Annex 2 DD 389).

Starting from the year 2017, statistics are calculated according to class of degree as per ministerial provisions.

Check the ECTS tables up to the 2022/2023 academic year

From the academic year 2023/2024, at the University of Basilicata, homogeneous groups of students are identified by merging courses of study in the same ISCED disciplinary area (1 digit). Within each disciplinary area, students are divided by study cycle (bachelor's, master's and single-cycle degree).

Check the ECTS tables for the academic year 2024/2025

Check the ECTS tables for the academic year 2023/2024

Check the list of study programmes by ISCED subject area (.xlsx)

WARNING: the grades may differ depending on the reference legislation (DM 270 or DM 509) and the same tables also show the grade converted to the ECTS scale.

The ECTS scale is constructed according to the following rule:

  • grade A corresponds to the grades obtained by the best 10% of students;
  • grade B corresponds to the grades obtained by the next 25%;
  • grade C corresponds to the grades obtained by the next 30%;
  • grade D corresponds to the grades obtained by the next 25%;
  • grade E corresponds to the grades obtained by the final 10%.

The ECTS scale is used on a residual basis for the conversion of grades obtained at institutions that have not yet adopted the ECTS tables, but only the scale.

It is important to underline that the ECTS scale only allows the transfer of grades between universities in countries belonging to the European Higher Education Area which have adopted the same ECTS scale and should not be confused with other grade scales expressed in letters of the alphabet. Outside the European Higher Education Area, different grading systems exist and often coexist, but no general mechanisms have been defined at the international level for the conversion of grades similar to ECTS.

Supporting documents: Students, before arriving, have to agree on a learning agreement for study or traineeship in case of placement, with the coordinators at home and host institutions detailing the student’s proposed study programme for the duration of the stay (i.e. individual course units and the number of related ECTS credits). This agreement must be approved by all the involved parties before the mobility.

At the end of the stay the student will receive a document called Transcript of records, or Traineeship certificate in case of a placement, to ensure that students have an accurate and up-to-date record of their progress, the educational components they have taken, the number of ECTS credits they have achieved and the grades they have been awarded. The transcript of records/traineeship certificate will be issued by the University of Basilicata for each incoming student and sent to the home institution at the end of their period of study.

Assessment methods: Each course is graded on a scale from 1 to 30, with 18 and 30 e lode (30 cum laude) as a minimum and maximum pass grade, respectively. Some exams can be evaluated by pass/fail (pass = superato or idoneo) or by sufficiente (sufficient); buono (good); eccellente or ottimo (excellent). For the final dissertation a 110-point scale is used, which is divided in two as well, with 66 being the minimum grade for passing. For outstanding results, the Lode "praise" is added to the maximum grade”. Please keep in mind that the “Idoneo”/”Pass” or "Approvato/approved" can never be transformed into a numerical grade and "respinto/failed exams" are not usually recorded therefore they cannot be listed in the Transcript of records. It is not possible to record a numerical grade lower than 18. If you fail the exam, you do not obtain the relative credits.

The Italian University System

Since 1999, with Ministry Decree no. 509/1999, amended on October 22, 2004, with Ministry Decree no. 270/2004, the Italian University System has been reformed. Following the European model, outlined by the Bologna process and it is now based on three main cycles of study:

  • First cycle degree programme: undergraduate studies/"Laurea" equivalent to Bachelor level of the Bologna Process - EQF6
  • Second cycle degree programmes: graduate studies/“Laurea Magistrale” and undergraduate studies/"Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico"equivalent to Master level of the Bologna Process - EQF 7
  • Third cycle degree programmes: post-graduate studies Doctoral studies (PhD) and Specialisation Schools - EQF 8.

The University also runs vocational programmes including first and second level Professional Master's Programmes, Post-Graduate programmes, Lifelong Learning Courses and Intensive Courses.

Undergraduate studies "Laurea" - 1st cycle

Course duration: 3 years

ECTS/Credit points: 180

Aims to provide a solid foundation in the core subjects as well as more specialized, professional training. To be admitted to a 1st cycle degree programme, you must have a secondary school diploma or a suitable equivalent foreign qualification.
To obtain the qualification (1st level degree) it is necessary to accumulate 180 credits (60 for each year of the course).

Students holding a 3-year undergraduate degree can either enter the job market or continue their studies by applying for a Master -2nd cycle degree programme - or a Professional Master programme.

Graduate studies/“Laurea Magistrale” equivalent to Master level of the Bologna Process - 2nd cycle

Course duration: 2 years

ECTS/Credit points: 120

Undertaken after the undergraduate degree it aims to provide rigorous, advanced training in more highly specialized areas. To be admitted to a 2nd cycle degree programme, you must have a 1st cycle degree or a suitable equivalent foreign qualification. To obtain the qualification (2nd cycle degree) it is necessary to accumulate 120 credits (60 for each year of the course)

Undergraduate studies "Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico" equivalent to Master level of the Bologna Process (combining Bachelor and Master degrees) - 2nd cycle

Course duration: 5/6 years

ECTS/Credit points: 300 or 360

The purpose of the Single-cycle Degree Programme is to provide advanced training and high-level qualifications in specific fields, in order to exercise a regulated profession. Single Cycle Degree Programmes, governed by European regulations, include Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Dental Prostheses, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemistry and Architecture. These programmes divide the learning activities over 5 or 6 years.
To be admitted to a single-cycle degree programme you must have a secondary school diploma.
To obtain the qualification (single-cycle degree) it is necessary to accumulate 300 credits, in the case of five-year courses, and 360 credits, in the case of six-year courses (60 for each year of the course).

Post-graduate studies/"Dottorato di ricerca" - PhD - 3rd cycle

A refresher/permanent training course that allows students to develop their expertise and skills in order to further improve their professional qualities. To be admitted you must hold a 1st or 2nd cycle degree. The courses vary in length. It differs from a master because no academic qualification is awarded, but students will receive a certificate that details the skills that have been acquired.

The Italian grading and credit system

The Italian grading system for exams registered in the study plan is measured in thirtieths (0-30) ranging from 18/30 - minimum grade - to 30/30 - maximum grade. The maximum grade can be enhanced with "cum laude" (with high distinction). The subject exams (referring to each separate topic) may be oral, written or practical; all the exams with a score lower than 18/30 are considered as not passed and thus are not registered on the transcript of the academic records.

The grading system for the final grade (graduation mark) is expressed in one hundred and tenths (0-100) ranging from 66/110 to 110/110, the highest mark being 110/100eLode (with high distinction).

Italy has two different credit systems referring to the two sectors of Italian higher education: university credits (Credito Formativo Universitario - CFU) for universities and academic credits (Credito Formativo Accademico - CFA) for Education for Art, Music and Dance (AFAM) institutions. Both systems are based on the concept of “workload” and are equivalent to the ECTS credit system. The workload includes lectures, practical work, seminars, tutorials, fieldwork, home study and examinations or other assessment activities. The university credit (CFU) and academic credit (CFA) normally correspond to 25 hours of student work, including individual study.

Degree programmes are usually structured with a workload of 60 ECTS per year: 1 ECTS corresponds to 1 CFU and  1 CFU corresponds to 25 hours of work and home study. Important: Credits are not intended to replace examination marks.

Internships and placements

The internship is an important occasion to develop students' vocational training having the first approach to the labour market. The University of Basilicata, through a specific memorandum of understanding, enables its students and graduates to spend a training period in enterprises, organisations, public entities, research centres, professional studies, etc. in Italy or abroad. Among them:

  • curricular internship permits both to gain credits that will be counted towards a degree and to create the first contact with the labour market. It is addressed to students who wish to spend a six-month (maximum) training vocational period for credits or work thesis. For further information, please visit http://portale.unibas.it/site/home/studenti/tirocini/tirocini-curriculari.html;
  • extra-curricular internship enables students to carry out a work experience at the same time or completion of their studies. It is on a voluntary basis and is addressed to final-year students and young graduates (within 12 months after achieving the academic qualification). The length of the training period is 6 months at most. For further information, please visit http://portale.unibas.it/site/home/studenti/tirocini/tirocini-di-orientamento.html

Trainees are covered against occupational accidents and third-party liability.

Academic guidance

Individual tutors, appointed by the Tutoring Committee at the beginning of the academic year (by October), are professors or researchers from the Department. The list of tutors is usually published on the Department's website. For more details, contact the Department's Academic Office.

International students at UNIBAS receive orientation and support services upon arrival in Potenza/Matera and throughout their stay. These services are provided by the International Relations Office, Department Coordinators, and Erasmus+ programme mentors.

Orientation and tutoring activities begin in the second-to-last year of high school, through the University Center for Guidance, Lifelong Learning, and Student Support (POLiS).

These services help students make informed choices about their education, support their university career, and enhance employability.

The activities include individual tutoring for academic challenges, exam preparation, thesis development, study planning, and career advice. Support also includes guidance on study abroad opportunities and aligning educational choices with professional goals.

Language requirements

As the majority of the courses offered by Unibas are taught in the Italian language, the B1 level in Italian Language is strongly recommended. Please note that no certificate is required.

Visa regulation

EU citizens do not need a visa to study in Italy.

Non-EU citizens must apply for a visa through the Italian diplomatic representation in their home country after registering on Universitaly portal, this tool has been designed for international students willing to study in Italy both for an entire study cycle or for a semester/year abroad.

Depending on citizenship, country of residence, length and purposes of the stay in Italy, students may need to obtain a Visa before coming to Italy. Check if you need an entry Visa and the documents required on MAECI Visa for Italy

This procedure does not concern citizens of Countries in the European Union, as well as from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the Swiss Confederation, the Republic of San Marino and the Holy See.

Students need to register first, select the Erasmus+ or other kind of study or traineeship program in the "Kind of Application" field, specify the Italian representative (Embassy/Consulate) in their country where they will apply for a visa, and fill in the online form (Guide to Pre-Enrolment Application - Universitaly Portal).

The University of Basilicata will only accept and validate applications from students who have completed the application procedure on the Esse3 platform. The Universitaly portal will then automatically generate a letter to be delivered by the candidates to the Italian representative abroad. The Embassy/Consulate will start the visa procedure only for candidates already accepted by the University.

The visa application procedure can take several months, so you must apply well in advance by using the Universitaly portal.

Please, mind that the Universitaly application is compulsory but does not guarantee or imply any automatic right to the issuing of the relative study visa, which is the exclusive responsibility of the competent embassy or consulate.

It is strongly recommended to ask for the issuance of an official Italian Tax Code (codice fiscale) at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. The “codice fiscale” (or Italian tax code) is required to carry out a wide range of activities in Italy, such as opening a bank account, signing a tenancy agreement, registering with the Italian National Health Service, and receiving payments or reimbursements from the University of Basilicata (if any).

There are two types of Visa: short-term (Uniform Schengen Visa. type - up to 90 days) and long-term (National Visa type more than 90 days). Both types of visas are issued by the Italian Consulate or Embassy in their home country.

To learn more about Schengen Visa, please consult the related website: Schengen visa information

EU/EEA and Switzerland students

Students from the EU or the EEA countries may move freely without the need for a study Visa.
Students with EU citizenship (and citizens coming from Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) can live in Italy for 3 months without incurring any legal obligation.
If the stay is longer than three months but still temporary (as an exchange student i.e.), at the end of the 3rd month, students must carry out a compulsory registration (iscrizione allo schedario della popolazione temporanea) at the municipality offices. The Application must be submitted to the "Ufficio Anagrafe" depending on where they live.
The registration is free of charge and must be carried out within the first 3 months of arrival in Italy.

If you need help, please contact incoming@unibas.it

Residence permit

EU Citizens

EU students can stay in Italy for up to 3 months provided that they have an international recognized ID issued by their country of origin.

After 3 months of entry to Italy, you will be required to register to the local "Anagrafe" in Potenza or Matera, providing a self-certification of enrolment, health insurance and documents demonstrating that you have the financial means to support yourself.

Non-EU Citizens

Depending on the duration of your stay in Italy, you have to apply for a residence permit or not: if you are a non-EU national and plan to come to Italy for a period exceeding three months, you must apply for a residence permit, while if the length of your stay is less of 3 months you are not required to apply for.

If it is your first time in Italy, you have 8 days to apply for a residence permit.

For stays of less than 90 days

For stays of more than 90 days

Health insurance

Medical coverage is mandatory for all students/trainees in Italy, but procedures are different for EU citizens and non-EU citizens.

The Emergency Medical Service guarantees Health Care Assistance for emergencies occurring during the night time, holidays or pre-holidays which are not covered by the family or local physician. In urgent situations, the physician can provide outpatient services, prescribe medicines, or illness certificates. This service is free for every citizen under the European Health Care System and foreigners with an agreement or in possession of a valid document proving their right to Medical Health Care (European Health Card). For other cases, it is expected payment for the medical visit.

For more info about UNIBAS insurances, please consult the insurance policy section. Please note that this coverage could be not enough for your stay. For more information about the different kinds of health insurance, check the information provided according to your profile.

Accident and civil liability Insurances

The University of Basilicata provides exchange and degree-seeking students, as well as incoming professors and administrative staff with insurance against accidents that may occur on the campus premises of the university or in any other place where you carry out study or traineeship or research activities as far as they are authorized by the University, as well as for civil liability toward third parties during the performance of institutional activities.

Third-party insurance (Assicurazione di responsabilità civile)

Third-party liability insurance is offered by the University of Basilicata to cover third-party damages that students could cause in and out of the Institution. The policy is extended to students, grant holders, trainees, postgraduate students, visiting/exchange students and professors, etc. staying at the University for vocational and educational training, analogous and other activities.

Accident insurance (Assicurazione contro gli infortuni)

Students coming to the University are covered against all risks that occur during all the institutional activities (in and out of UNIBAS) provided for or allowed by the University.

Please bear in mind that the policy does not cover medical treatment expenses for which, according to your citizenship, individual health insurance is required.

For further and detailed information, please contact innocenzo.cinefra@unibas.it or incoming@unibas.it

Tax code (tax identification number)

The Tax Identification Number (Codice Fiscale) is an identification document necessary in any relationship between citizens and public administrations. It is necessary to open a bank or a postal account and to enroll in the National Health Service, as well as it must be shown during the enrolment process. It is also required to lodge at the Halls of Residence managed by the Regional Education Agency (A.R.D.S.U.) and receive payments or reimbursements from the University of Basilicata. All students and teachers have to apply for this tax code and then return a copy of it to incoming@unibas.it.

You can obtain your Italian tax code before or after arriving in Italy.

Before arriving in Italy

If the Italian Consulate / Embassy in your country offers this service, you can apply for an official Italian tax code before you travel to Italy.

After arriving in Italy

To obtain the tax code after arriving in Italy you can go to the local "Uffici Territoriali” (local offices) of the “Agenzia delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency):

Ufficio Territoriale di Potenza

Ufficio Territoriale di Matera

during opening hours and by appointment, which you have to book on the “Agenzia delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency) website.

You must submit these documents:

  • the application form, which must be completed and signed. If you do not yet have a permanent address in Italy, you can leave box C blank;
  • for non-EU citizens: valid passport, with visa (when required);
  • for EU citizens: passport or identity document.

As soon as you have a permanent address in Italy, or if you change address/residence in the future, you can book an appointment and go back to the “Agenzia delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency) to update your data, by handing in the documents relating to your accommodation.

If in the meantime you have registered with the “Servizio Sanitario Nazionale” (Italian National Health Service), you can ask for the “Tessera Sanitaria” (European Health Insurance Card) to be printed and sent to the address provided.

For more information on how to obtain the tax code and download the application form and related instructions, please consult the Agenzia delle Entrate website.

How to open a bank account or a rechargeable debit card

Opening a bank account in Italy is not free and there are charges twice a year made for having the account. Procedures for EU students and Non-EU are similar.

Documents required are:

  • codice fiscale Italian tax code (Tax Identification Number)
  • Valid ID Card. For Non‐UE students the permit of stay (permesso di soggiorno) or the receipt of the post office is required;
  • University Registration form and matriculation number.

However, at the post office, you can buy a rechargeable debit card (postepay) which you can then use to withdraw money or make purchases. This costs € 5,00 and there is a € 1,00 charge for every withdrawal. To sign up for this ‘postepay’ card, students should go to the post office, taking with them a valid passport or identity card and their Italian tax code (codice fiscale).
