Admission to one or more single courses

Both EU and non-EU citizens legally residing in Italy, as well as non-EU citizens residing abroad, can register for one or more single courses, for a maximum number of 36 CFU (36 ECTS credits), without enrolling in a course of study and awarding an academic title.

The deadlines for submitting the application to the Students Office are:

September 30, for courses held in the first semester or year;

February 28, for courses held in the second semester.

Important: the registration to single courses is valid for one academic year. If students do not take the related exam within the last useful session, they will lose their registration.

Enrolment fees

The University of Basilicata provides exchange and degree-seeking students, as well as incoming professors and administrative staff with insurance against accidents that may occur on the campus premises of the university or in any other place where you carry out study or traineeship or research activities as far as they are authorized by the University, as well as for civil liability toward third parties during the performance of institutional activities.

Third-party insurance (Assicurazione di responsabilità civile)

The policy is extended to students, grant holders, trainees, postgraduate students, visiting/exchange students and professors, etc. staying at the University for vocational and educational training, analogous and other activities.

Visa regulation

EU citizens do not need a visa to study in Italy.

Non-EU citizens must apply for a visa through the Italian diplomatic representation in their home country after registering on Universitaly portal, this tool has been designed for international students willing to study in Italy both for an entire study cycle or for a semester/year abroad.

Depending on citizenship, country of residence, length and purposes of the stay in Italy, students may need to obtain a Visa before coming to Italy. Check if you need an entry Visa and the documents required on MAECI Visa for Italy

This procedure does not concern citizens of Countries in the European Union, as well as from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the Swiss Confederation, the Republic of San Marino and the Holy See.

Students need to register first, select the Erasmus+ or other kind of study or traineeship program in the "Kind of Application" field, specify the Italian representative (Embassy/Consulate) in their country where they will apply for a visa, and fill in the online form (Guide to Pre-Enrolment Application - Universitaly Portal).

The University of Basilicata will only accept and validate applications from students who have completed the application procedure on the Esse3 platform. The Universitaly portal will then automatically generate a letter to be delivered by the candidates to the Italian representative abroad. The Embassy/Consulate will start the visa procedure only for candidates already accepted by the University.

The visa application procedure can take several months, so you must apply well in advance by using the Universitaly portal.

Please, mind that the Universitaly application is compulsory but does not guarantee or imply any automatic right to the issuing of the relative study visa, which is the exclusive responsibility of the competent embassy or consulate.

It is strongly recommended to ask for the issuance of an official Italian Tax Code (codice fiscale) at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. The “codice fiscale” (or Italian tax code) is required to carry out a wide range of activities in Italy, such as opening a bank account, signing a tenancy agreement, registering with the Italian National Health Service, and receiving payments or reimbursements from the University of Basilicata (if any).

There are two types of Visa: short-term (Uniform Schengen Visa. type - up to 90 days) and long-term (National Visa type more than 90 days). Both types of visas are issued by the Italian Consulate or Embassy in their home country.

To learn more about Schengen Visa, please consult the related website: Schengen visa information

EU/EEA and Switzerland students

Students from the EU or the EEA countries may move freely without the need for a study Visa.
Students with EU citizenship (and citizens coming from Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) can live in Italy for 3 months without incurring any legal obligation.
If the stay is longer than three months but still temporary (as an exchange student i.e.), at the end of the 3rd month, students must carry out a compulsory registration (iscrizione allo schedario della popolazione temporanea) at the municipality offices. The Application must be submitted to the "Ufficio Anagrafe" depending on where they live.
The registration is free of charge and must be carried out within the first 3 months of arrival in Italy.

If you need help, please contact incoming@unibas.it

Facilities and charges

Visiting Students acquire the same rights and can take advantage of the same facilities as the other students of the University of Basilicata: they can take final exams, use the libraries and computer laboratories of the University, take part in the student associations, have access to the university canteens at special prices, benefit from accident insurance, etc. Moreover, they can ask for accommodation in Potenza in the Halls of Residence managed by the Regional Education Agency. Expenses for travel, meals, accommodation, health insurance and medical care are entirely the student's responsibility, as well as expenses for books and visas for entry and stay.

With the support of the Regional Education Authority (Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario - A.R.D.S.U.), the University of Basilicata offers students involved in the exchange programme the possibility to lodge in the Halls of Residences. Unfortunately, this opportunity is given to students coming only to Potenza for the entire duration of the stay with the exception of August when the residence is closed because no halls of residence are available in Matera.

For detailed information, students have to contact by email the A.R.D.S.U. in the person of Antonio Luongo e-mail: antonio.luongo@ardsubasilicata.it.

The Internationalization Service, upon request of the student and together with the local ESN, will help the student in finding private accommodation.

Academic guidance

Individual tutors, appointed by the Tutoring Committee at the beginning of the academic year (by October), are professors or researchers from the Department. The list of tutors is usually published on the Department's website. For more details, contact the Department's Academic Office.

International students at UNIBAS receive orientation and support services upon arrival in Potenza/Matera and throughout their stay. These services are provided by the International Relations Office, Department Coordinators, and Erasmus+ programme mentors.

Orientation and tutoring activities begin in the second-to-last year of high school, through the University Center for Guidance, Lifelong Learning, and Student Support (POLiS).

These services help students make informed choices about their education, support their university career, and enhance employability.

The activities include individual tutoring for academic challenges, exam preparation, thesis development, study planning, and career advice. Support also includes guidance on study abroad opportunities and aligning educational choices with professional goals.

Grades and Certification of Attendance of teaching activities not included in the curriculum

According to the Italian University System, for each learning activity students gain a certain number of university credits (in Italian: 'Crediti Formativi Universitari' or CFU) and a qualitative evaluation (mark awarded on a 30-point scale or pass/fail exam. The minimum mark for passing an exam is 18/30, while 30/30 (with possible honours) is the highest mark.

Credits (CFU) are units that are used to measure the total amount of workload required to a student, in terms of (class time, individual study, exam preparation, practical work etc.) and one credit is equivalent to 25 hours. One academic year corresponds to 60 university credits. To learn more, please look into the "What the ECTS is" and related boxes. The grades in the Italian University system are expressed out of thirty. You pass an exam or internship with a grade of at least 18/30. If you obtain full grade (30/30) the examination board may also decide to award you honours (lode).

Important: failed exams are not usually recorded and therefore they are not listed in your Transcript of Records. If your university requires failed exams to be listed in your Transcript of Records, you must explicitly ask the professor to record the fail, immediately after the exam. The failed exam can be recorded as "respinto" (rejected) if you finished and failed the examination, or "ritirato" (withdrawn), if you did not finish the examination. It is not possible to record a numerical grade lower than 18. If you fail the exam you do not obtain the relative credits.

For some activities, i.e. language exams, including the Italian language courses, some internships, laboratories and seminars, you will not be given a grade but merely an Idoneo/Pass. The same Idoneo/Pass is listed in the Transcript of Records. The Idoneo/Pass can never be transformed into a numerical grade.

In the Transcript of Records, which is issued to you at the end of the exchange period, the grades are indicated on the Italian scale out of thirty and are converted in the ECTS scale.

How can be certified teaching activities not included in the curriculum

If you need a certificate of attendance, ask the professor during the first lesson because he/she will decide whether to issue a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.

In the Italian system, mere frequency is not enough to obtain credits. If you wish to take part in activities that are not in the course unit catalogue and which can therefore not be included in your study plan (some internships, seminars, preparation of the dissertation, etc.), you must immediately agree with the professor on how to perform and certify them. Please, don't forget that these activities and evaluations can be only certified by the professors on stamped and signed headed paper, but they cannot be recorded on your Transcript of Records. Therefore, check well in advance whether your university accepts this kind of certification, please.

Changing the study plan and the duration of the exchange period

How to change your Learning Agreement

During your stay you can change your Learning Agreement, by following these steps:

  • If you do not have a form for changing your courses, download it, print and sign it. You should complete and sign only the section called "During the Mobility". In fact, the section called "Before the Mobility" has already been signed before your arrival in Potenza/Matera.
  • Ask your Departmental Coordinator in Potenza/Matera to help you to decide which courses to add or drop and have the form signed by him/her.
  • Come to the Internationalization Service to have the LA stamped and sent to your university by e-mail. As an alternative, you can request the stamp by email (mobint@unibas.it or mobint1@unibas.it), enclosing a complete copy of the document
  • After the modified Learning Agreement has been counter-signed by your university, you should send a scanned copy of it to mobint@unibas.it
  • Send a scanned copy of the Learning Agreement duly signed by the parties involved to mobint@unibas.it and contextually to the relevant Administrative Unit of the Student Office.
Transcript of records and confirmation of attendance

Before your departure from Potenza or Matera, it is essential to complete the check-out process with the Internationalization Service:

  • In Potenza: You must contact and physically go to the Internationalization Service in person.

  • In Matera: Please write to violetta.pedalino@unibas.it to arrange your check-out.

Important: Check-out must be completed in person. It is not permitted to delegate this task to someone else.

Documents Required for Check-Out

  1. copy of all documents related to the activities carried out during your period at this University. These documents must be issued by:

    • The Coordinator of your department, or

    • Your supervisor, in the case of thesis work.

It is strongly recommended to meet with your Department Coordinator before visiting the Internationalization Service to finalize the "After the Mobility" section (Table E) of your Learning Agreement (only in the case of paper version)

  1. Your completed Learning Agreement (all sections). In the case of the online Learning Agreement, it is not necessary.

  2. Verify that all exams taken during your stay are correctly recorded in the ESSE3 online portal under the section: Carriera > Libretto

Transcript of Records (ToR)

If all data has been correctly entered in the ESSE3 system, your Transcript of Records will be sent immediately to your home university by email.
If any grades are missing, the transcript will be sent only after the missing data has been entered into the system.

To avoid delays, regularly check your ESSE3 profile and promptly contact your professors for any missing grades before your departure.

Additional Obligations Before Departure

  • You must check out with the Regional Education Agency.

  • Return any borrowed books to the university libraries.

Note: If you fail to complete these steps, your Transcript of Records will not be issued.

Confirmation of Attendance

At the time of your check-out, you will receive a Confirmation of Attendance, stating the start and end dates of your mobility period. You are responsible for submitting this document to your home university.

If your university has specific forms to confirm the duration of your stay, please bring them with you for completion.

Note: The official end date of your exchange corresponds to the Check-Out date. After this date, you will no longer be allowed to:

  • Take exams

  • Participate in academic or teaching activities

Certificate of Academic Activities (for Visiting Students)

At the end of your study period:

  • Visiting Students who have taken exams at the University of Basilicata may request a certificate (subject to tax stamp) from the Students Office. This will list:

    • The exams taken

    • ECTS credits earned

    • Additional relevant academic information for credit recognition at your home institution

  • Visiting Students involved in independent research may request a written declaration signed by their academic tutor at UNIBAS, detailing the work carried out.

Upon request by your home university, the tutor may also be invited to participate in the final thesis defense based on the research conducted during your exchange.

Evaluation Survey

At the end of your Erasmus period, it is also required to fill in an evaluation questionnaire about this university, services and difficulties incurred during your stay here. It is a Google form so you can enter using the institutional email given upon your arrival.

Click here to get access to the survey.

Thank you so much for your collaboration!

Recommendation

You are recommended NOT to book their flight back home the day after their last exam. Sometimes the dates might change.

Please don't forget to go to the Internationalization Service or to contact the Department contact person in Matera (violetta.pedalino@unibas.it) before you return home to close out your mobility period. We would be grateful if you could make an appointment with our staff at least 3 days before your departure. Please email us at incoming@unibas.it.
