Visa regulation
EU citizens do not need a visa to study in Italy.
Non-EU citizens must apply for a visa through the Italian diplomatic representation in their home country after registering on Universitaly portal, this tool has been designed for international students willing to study in Italy both for an entire study cycle or for a semester/year abroad.
Depending on citizenship, country of residence, length and purposes of the stay in Italy, students may need to obtain a Visa before coming to Italy. Check if you need an entry Visa and the documents required on MAECI Visa for Italy
This procedure does not concern citizens of Countries in the European Union, as well as from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the Swiss Confederation, the Republic of San Marino and the Holy See.
Students need to register first, select the Erasmus+ or other kind of study or traineeship program in the "Kind of Application" field, specify the Italian representative (Embassy/Consulate) in their country where they will apply for a visa, and fill in the online form (Guide to Pre-Enrolment Application - Universitaly Portal).
The University of Basilicata will only accept and validate applications from students who have completed the application procedure on the Esse3 platform. The Universitaly portal will then automatically generate a letter to be delivered by the candidates to the Italian representative abroad. The Embassy/Consulate will start the visa procedure only for candidates already accepted by the University.
The visa application procedure can take several months, so you must apply well in advance by using the Universitaly portal.
Please, mind that the Universitaly application is compulsory but does not guarantee or imply any automatic right to the issuing of the relative study visa, which is the exclusive responsibility of the competent embassy or consulate.
It is strongly recommended to ask for the issuance of an official Italian Tax Code (codice fiscale) at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. The codice fiscale (or Italian tax code) is required to carry out a wide range of activities in Italy, such as opening a bank account, signing a tenancy agreement, registering with the Italian National Health Service, and receiving payments or reimbursements from the University of Basilicata (if any).
There are two types of Visa: short-term (Uniform Schengen Visa. type - up to 90 days) and long-term (National Visa type more than 90 days). Both types of visas are issued by the Italian Consulate or Embassy in their home country.
- Short term (Uniform Schengen Visa, Type C, up to 90 days)
- Long term (National Visa, Type D, more than 90 days)
- Non-EU citizen studying at university in another EU country

EU/EEA and Switzerland students
Students from the EU or the EEA countries may move freely without the need for a study Visa.
Students with EU citizenship (and citizens coming from Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) can live in Italy for 3 months without incurring any legal obligation.
If the stay is longer than three months but still temporary (as an exchange student i.e.), at the end of the 3rd month, students must carry out a compulsory registration (iscrizione allo schedario della popolazione temporanea) at the municipality offices. The Application must be submitted to the "Ufficio Anagrafe" depending on where they live.
The registration is free of charge and must be carried out within the first 3 months of arrival in Italy.
