Student applicants must be registered on a full degree at another HE Institution outside of Italy, either at undergraduate or postgraduate level leading to a recognized tertiary level qualification.
Students may receive grants from their home Institution for mobility periods totaling up to 12 months maximum per each cycle of study (if enrolled in a single-cycle degree programme, students can total up to 24 months). Prior experience under LLP-Erasmus Programme is counting towards the 12 months per study cycle, independently from the number and type of mobility activities, as follows:
The application process starts with a nomination email from the partner university to the University of Basilicata. Applicants cannot self-nominate, rather the person in charge at partner universities should send an e-mail to the Internationalization Service (incoming@unibas.it) in which they announce their candidates for traineeship.
The University will only consider applications from students who have been selected within the Erasmus+ programme and nominated by their home institution. The nomination has to report the following data for each selected student:
Students must be officially nominated by the Home University by email (incoming@unibas.it) at least three months before the start of the traineeships. In case of nominations received after the deadline, they will be evaluated case-by-case.
The University of Basilicata admits foreign students for traineeship only if there is a specific agreement between the University and the foreign university concerned. New agreements are possible and can be stipulated through the Internationalization Service (incoming@unibas.it) well in advance before the expected mobility period, upon request of the Coordinator of the Department involved.
Click on the list below to verify Inter-Institutional agreements signed by this University including traineeship activities or contact the International Office at their home Institution:
Once you have been nominated by your home university, you will receive an email including the token to access the ESSE3 system and start the registration procedure at Unibas. Once you have completed the registration process you will be able to submit your application online. Click HERE to start.
Warning: before entering the ESSE3 system, please read the Registration and Application Guide carefully.
Application period: Students are encouraged to apply at least 2 months in advance of the date they wish to start, having already defined the traineeship activities with the supervisor at their home University. In case of administrative or academic needs, please contact us (mobint@unibas.it) before applying.
Later applications cannot be accepted! As part of your application, you will be required to submit some supporting documents including evidence of your Italian or English language proficiency, even if no certificate is required, in accordance with the Institutional Agreement signed with your home University (usually B1 level unless required by the agreement itself). It is also strongly recommended, at this stage, to define the activities to be carried out during the exchange period with the Departmental or Institutional Coordinator of your home University and the Departmental Coordinator, whose references are in the Contact section, or with the local tutor of the University of Basilicata.
To complete your application form you need to upload the following documents:
As the majority of the courses offered by Unibas are taught in the Italian language, the B1 level in Italian Language is strongly recommended. Please note that no certificate is required.
Students are obliged to send the Learning Agreement, duly completed and approved by the home University, before the mobility period if not sent in addition to the application form. It must be agreed with your home University and with the Departmental Coordinators or with UNIBAS tutors. As soon as completed and signed by the parties involved, it must be sent by email to mobint@unibas.it. Please, don't forget that the Learning Agreement must be approved by the universities involved before starting the mobility period.
The template provided by the home institution is accepted. A common template can be found in the "useful documents" section.
Documents duly submitted by students will be sent to the Coordinator of the Department concerned where the final decision of acceptance is made. Students accepted by the UNIBAS Department will receive via email:
Students are advised to learn the Italian language before coming to Potenza/Matera (at least B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). We expect the home University to make sure that the students possess the required language competence and do not require students to submit a language certificate.
At least one month before the start of the mobility period, exact information about the date of arrival must be provided via email to incoming@unibas.it and suigeneris_basilicata@esn.it. Students need also to contact the Regional Education Agency - A.R.D.S.U., sending an email to antonio.luongo@ardsubasilicata.it, if it was selected the item "Hall of Residences" in the section "Accommodation" in the application form. Please, do not forget that this service is offered only in Potenza, while in Matera students need to search individually for accommodation on the private market. In this case, the Internationalization Service staff (incoming@unibas.it) as well as of the local ESN (suigeneris_basilicata@esn.it) could help you in searching a comfortable lodging.
Only for non-EU citizens: Non-EU students need to send to incoming@unibas.it a scanned copy of the Visa (multy-entry visa, short term - Uniform Schengen Visa, Type C, up to 90 days) or long-term, National Visa, Type D, more than 90 days) and the Health Insurance valid in Italy. For more info please consult the Health Insurance webpage.
EU citizens do not need a visa to study in Italy.
Non-EU citizens must apply for a visa through the Italian diplomatic representation in their home country after registering on Universitaly portal, this tool has been designed for international students willing to study in Italy both for an entire study cycle or for a semester/year abroad.
Depending on citizenship, country of residence, length and purposes of the stay in Italy, students may need to obtain a Visa before coming to Italy. Check if you need an entry Visa and the documents required on MAECI Visa for Italy
This procedure does not concern citizens of Countries in the European Union, as well as from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the Swiss Confederation, the Republic of San Marino and the Holy See.
Students need to register first, select the Erasmus+ or other kind of study or traineeship program in the "Kind of Application" field, specify the Italian representative (Embassy/Consulate) in their country where they will apply for a visa, and fill in the online form (Guide to Pre-Enrolment Application - Universitaly Portal).
The University of Basilicata will only accept and validate applications from students who have completed the application procedure on the Esse3 platform. The Universitaly portal will then automatically generate a letter to be delivered by the candidates to the Italian representative abroad. The Embassy/Consulate will start the visa procedure only for candidates already accepted by the University.
The visa application procedure can take several months, so you must apply well in advance by using the Universitaly portal.
Please, mind that the Universitaly application is compulsory but does not guarantee or imply any automatic right to the issuing of the relative study visa, which is the exclusive responsibility of the competent embassy or consulate.
It is strongly recommended to ask for the issuance of an official Italian Tax Code (codice fiscale) at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. The codice fiscale (or Italian tax code) is required to carry out a wide range of activities in Italy, such as opening a bank account, signing a tenancy agreement, registering with the Italian National Health Service, and receiving payments or reimbursements from the University of Basilicata (if any).
There are two types of Visa: short-term (Uniform Schengen Visa. type - up to 90 days) and long-term (National Visa type more than 90 days). Both types of visas are issued by the Italian Consulate or Embassy in their home country.
To learn more about Schengen Visa, please consult the related website: Schengen visa information
EU/EEA and Switzerland students
Students from the EU or the EEA countries may move freely without the need for a study Visa.
Students with EU citizenship (and citizens coming from Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) can live in Italy for 3 months without incurring any legal obligation.
If the stay is longer than three months but still temporary (as an exchange student i.e.), at the end of the 3rd month, students must carry out a compulsory registration (iscrizione allo schedario della popolazione temporanea) at the municipality offices. The Application must be submitted to the "Ufficio Anagrafe" depending on where they live.
The registration is free of charge and must be carried out within the first 3 months of arrival in Italy.
If you need help, please contact incoming@unibas.it
Medical coverage is mandatory for all students/trainees in Italy, but procedures are different for EU citizens and non-EU citizens.
The Emergency Medical Service guarantees Health Care Assistance for emergencies occurring during the night time, holidays or pre-holidays which are not covered by the family or local physician. In urgent situations, the physician can provide outpatient services, prescribe medicines, or illness certificates. This service is free for every citizen under the European Health Care System and foreigners with an agreement or in possession of a valid document proving their right to Medical Health Care (European Health Card). For other cases, it is expected payment for the medical visit.
For more info about UNIBAS insurances, please consult the insurance policy section. Please note that this coverage could be not enough for your stay. For more information about the different kinds of health insurance, check the information provided according to your profile.
